What Keeps You Awake At Night?

For a year or so, after my retirement, I kept getting up in the odd hours of the night.

It kept recurring, at the same unearthly hour of 3:16 a.m. Think of it what you will. At one time, it was 3:17! That was funny.

It made me almost miss the days when I used to drop into bed and be out like a light within seconds. But that was due more to exhaustion from long hours and commutes.

This new occurrence was triggered by one stray thought entering my mind during the few moments that I awakened.

The mind would race uncontrollably, veering from the most mundane matters to the most ridiculous scenarios.

For parents or spouses, concerns about finances, children, health, family, and societal pressures often weigh heavily on the mind. Ditto with me.

I found some consolation on a Quora board.

Looks like I was not alone after all.

Some of the responses were:

  • The fear of dying an ordinary death without making a positive impact on others.
  • Past decisions and contemplating future choices.
  • Nightmares and ghosts.
  • Recurring themes of loss, humiliation, and loneliness.
  • The future of humanity.
  • Homework.
  • PTSD.
  • Irrational fear.

Leaving the homework and ghost pieces aside, the rest sound so eerily similar. Maybe we are united in more ways than we know!

How Did I Get Over Them Though? 🤔

  • By watching TV. The idiot box is probably still the best cure for insomnia.
  • If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. I decided to start the day early. After all, it’s not like I have a job and a commute anymore. Meditation, prayer, and sitting in silence helps to cope.

It’s not rocket science and most of us would know of the following tried and tested remedies already:

  1. Establishing a consistent sleep schedule.
  2. Creating a relaxing bedtime routine.
  3. Optimizing the sleep environment.
  4. Limiting exposure to electronic devices before bedtime.
  5. Diet and exercise.
  6. Managing stress.
  7. Limiting alcohol and caffeine, and in extreme cases,
  8. Seeking professional healthcare help if necessary.

One More Thing

Over the last year or so, I added weekly reflexology massages and daily terahertz frequency therapy. Both my wife and I have made it part of our daily and weekly routine.

The Results?

I sleep better and hardly wake up in the wee hours anymore.

I have fewer worries. I am more content with my lot and the world, and

I have more energy to engage with all the things that interest me.

Final Thoughts

Today, the popularity of alternative therapies is increasing due to factors like personal control over health decisions, dissatisfaction with conventional treatments, alignment with personal beliefs, and perceived benefits in addressing health issues.

I am one of them.

It would be great to hear from you.
